Walking School Bus

Aidan's school launched a monthly walk and roll day that will be held every first Friday of the month. Although we don't live walking distance to school we decided to have Aidan participate, with the incentive that the first 100 students to walk in got a free pedometer. I located the most convenient drop off spot for Aidan to pick up the walking school bus. This turned out to be about a mile away from the school. I thought it seemed a bit far for him as a first time walk, but what the heck, everyone else is doing it, he'll be fine. Well he made it. He got his free pedometer, ha! it's those little things that make it all worth it , right?! The kids all filled out a form that was hung at the entrance. The form stated their name and how they felt about their walk. As i was looking them over, they all said they felt happy, or good. Then, I came across Aidan's, which said "I felt exhausted!" and yes, he added the exclamation point. I had to laugh, wish I'd taken a photo of it...clearly the boy needs exercise. Thank goodness little league season is about to begin.

Sneaker Hockey Fun

I took the boys to a TBB event today that was held at a local sports and fitness club. The boys had a great time, jumpy houses, obstacle courses, soccer, basketball but best of all was the sneaker hockey. They all truly enjoyed this and stuck to the lesson all the way through. I thought this was especially impressive for my 3 1/2 yr old twins. Liam most of all, demonstrated agility with the stick and perseverance to get that puck where it needed to be. Afterwards they all said they really enjoyed it and Aidan even asked if he could join the team :) I just might have some hockey players on my hands....I love daydreaming about what it is they might actually get into, because of this I delight in indulging them with the opportunities to explore possible interests. You just never know what it might be that truly clicks with them...could it be hockey?

Soccer Comes To An End

Friday was the boys last soccer class for the season. They really enjoyed going and did really well. Especially Miles, he was great at following directions and participating in all the exercises. This was surprising because I really expected Liam to do better since he's so sporty. Turns out Liam wasn't always interested in following along with the activities but wanted to do his own thing and pick and choose what looked like fun. Despite that, I think they both got a lot out of going, they got to participate in a group activity, follow directions, focus attention, and got physical exercise. Although I thought the class was great for them, I've decided not to sign them up again since they'll be starting preschool in November. I think they'll be pretty busy with preschool and will be getting plenty of physical exercise at their play-based preschool that has a great play area. I'm also planning on swim classes for them in November when they turn 3. So with preschool and swim class, I didn't want to overwhelm them with too much additional scheduled activity. I'm sure we'll be coming back to soccer class sometime in the future.

Another Attempt

A while back in an attempt to be fit, I had begun to exercise. I had started hiking and was doing well, strength and endurance were building. I soon fell off the fitness wagon, it started with illness, then house guests, followed by camping. So, today, once again, I got on that wagon. I realize that if I want to lead a vital healthy lifestyle, I would need to include exercise. Today I went running for the first time in what feels like decades. It was difficult, it was invigorating, and it was enlightening. I'm sure tomorrow every inch of my body will have bloated with lactic acid build up and I'll be aching with every little movement. For now, I look forward to my next run.

5 Miles and Someone Gets Comfy

I did a 5 mile hike today...I can't believe it. Lots of inclines and rough terrain, the makings for an incredibly sore body tomorrow. The truth is it was meant to be a 2.5 mile hike but my hiking guide took us on a wrong turn adding 2.5 miles of mostly uphill terrain to the hike. So I was forced into it but now I'm feeling pretty good about it. I think I'll soak in an Epsom salt bath now, and maybe later make myself comfy on the couch once Liam gives up the spot.

Liam has taken to hanging out on the couch with this new favorite blanket of his. He props himself up with pillows, with no help from us and pulls the covers over himself and just hangs out watching the motions of the rest of us around him. It's hilarious to see him there just kicking it and also probably the calmest you'll ever see him. Because, when he's not in this position, he's the wildest of the bunch, loud laughing, and lots of running and jumping. I guess, that's what makes him laying on the couch so humorous to us because it's so out of character for him.

Exercise Sure Starts A Day

Lately I've been surrounded by friends who are exercising, some on a fairly regular basis and others truly committed. This all just made me feel a bit unsettled and yet equally motivated to do something. It's with much chagrin that I admit, I have not exercised in quite a long time. (Please don't ask how long.) Well, today I started the day with an early morning hike, a little over 2 miles at a pretty constant pace. I stopped once to catch my breath before an incline. Although it was challenging, I have to say it was also extremely invigorating. Before the hike I was thinking I was going to need to come home and nap after the hike since I didn't get much sleep the night before(that's another story), but instead I came home and was energized and ready for my day. Exercise sure starts a day right.
